Catalina

Between travel to see Lacey's family, to plan our wedding, and to just generally relax, we have gone back and forth to Catalina several times in the last few years. Here are some of the pictures from our trips.

Santa Catalina Island is one of the Channel Islands off the Southern California coast.  It can be reached by ferry or helicopter. Ferries depart from Long Beach, San Pedro, Newport Beach, Corona Del Mar, and Dana Point.  Avalon is the main town on the island, but a small population also lives out at the Isthmus towards the western end of Catalina.  The majority of the island is undeveloped and its natural beauty is maintained by the Catalina Conservancyand Catalina Island Company. Once owned by William Wrigley, Jr. the island was home to a spring training camp for the Chicago Cubs, and the Wrigley family still has several homes scattered around Avalon.  Wrigley's home was converted into the Inn at Mt. Ada, and has a beautiful panoramic view of the city of Avalon and Avalon Bay. We were lucky to stay there after our wedding.

Lacey's grandfather served the island as its doctor for over 50 years. Dr. Bob lived there with his wife, Virginia, and their five children, Jan, June, Nancy, John (Lacey's dad), and Robin.  While Lacey's grandparents have passed away, their memory lives on in the town.  The Staff children share the Staff House on Catalina, and the family still gets together there for occasional holidays.

Check out the Staff House page for more information and trivia.
