I made a trip with Lacey and her family to Kawaii in the summer of 2005. One of my favorite parts of the trip was getting up well before the sun rose, and heading down to the beach to do some fly fishing.  It was warm enough to wear a tee shirt and shorts while standing waist-deep in the water.  The beach gets crowded later in the day, but very few people were up by the time I was done fishing.

The fly fishing was much tougher than I anticipated, but I was rewarded with some very colorful fish. Hawaii is not a great flats fishing place, because the strong winds blow almost all of the time and make fly fishing very difficult. The terrain is mostly steep and rocky, so it is not very amenable to fly fishing to begin with.  I also began to notice while I was snorkeling that there are very few fish that really appear to be predatory. Most of the fish have very tiny mouths, and spend their days pecking at the corral. This is very different from the saltwater fishing that I am used to, where you can usually tell that all of the fish are out to eat other fish just by looking at them.  Even the little surf perch in San Diego look much more predatory than these little guys.  I caught the cornetfish (upper left) using a gummy minnow.  It gave a very weak fight, but was fun to catch. I don’t know what the scrappy little guy on in the middle is, who bit a brown wooly bugger. The colorful fish on the right is an ornate wrasse, which is very common in the area.

The saddlewrass is a colorful fish that is common along the reefs of Kawau. I have never seen a fish that uses structure to escape as deliberately as this fish. When I hooked a saddle wrass, it would immediately head for the nearest rock and burrow under it.  I often had to wade over to the rock and turn it over, only for the fish to instantly stick under the next rock. This behavior is a great reason to use heavy leader, at

Blackspot seargents made up a large portion of the fish that I caught. Oddly, while snorkeling I only saw the Hawaii seargentfish and no blackspots.
