The Tichenor family and friend Erik Simons made a second fishing trip to Alaska, this time in pursuit of Salmon in the saltwater.  Eric and I rented a Amaruk double kayak (Necky Kayaks) from Southeast Kayaks which served as a perfect fishing vessel for us. Mom, Dad, and Bill fished from a 14-foot skiff rented from Knudson Cove Marina.  We began our trip on the second week of August 2007, right at the hight of the pink salmon season, the end of the king season and beginning of the silver season. According to the locals, the silver season peaks about a month later and is the biggest attraction in the area.

We found hot action for most of the trip with buzz bombs and crippled herring lures. We were able to locate the fish most of the time by following their surface activity, which was usually greatest early in the morning. The pinks were often chasing small minnows just at the surface, often with their backs out of the water.  I tied up a silver and pink streamer which caught them almost without fail when they were in this feeding mode.  Sometimes they would move to deeper water and could be caught vertical jigging. We started this trip knowing almost nothing about salmon fishing, but the fish were so numerous that it didn’t take us long to learn. I have read at other web pages that pink salmon bite all day long, but we did not find this to be true.  Our best action occurred before ten in the morning most days.
